1597. This date is engraved on the sandstone arches over the entrance to the cellar and is still visible – the year when the first foundation stone was laid for the later Fueter House in Marktgasse. Although the building has undergone many structural changes since then, the original basic fabric has remained largely the same.
While the surrounding buildings were completely gutted in the 1970s and only the façades remained, the conservative attitude of the Fueter family was based on the concept of ‘preservation’. For this old Bernese family, tradition still means casting a grateful look into the past; acting with moderation in the present; and the wish to leave something behind which future generations can also take pleasure in.
